Apologies for being so rubbish at providing new posts on your health, nutrition and workouts, but we’ve spending the majority of our time over at our Facebook page “Personal Trainer Doha”.  Check it out if you haven’t already, and hit the little box that says “like”.  Magical things happen.

Just because we’ve been slack in writing posts, doesn’t mean we’ve been slack in anything else.  We’re still busy training loads of people, trying to stay healthy ourselves, and aiming to keep up with our baby boy, who’s 10 months old (he’s the hardest workout I’ve ever had).

Yesterday, I was talking to a guy who was telling me how he never manages to get started because the task at hand seems too daunting.  It seems too difficult and when something is difficult, it’s a lot easier to not start it in the first place.  Family, work, laziness and leisure can all get in the way of achieving our fitness goals.  For the majority of people, all of the above are more appealing that spending an hour slogging away in the gym – especially if you don’t have a clue what you’re doing.  And I mean, really don’t have a clue what you’re doing.

We’ve all seen pieces on the news about training, or read about it in a magazine or newspaper – but trust me, that does not make anyone an expert on the subject.  Nutrition is one of the biggest mistake riddled topics thrown around gym floors all over the world.

So the best advice we can give you, if you’re starting out is to chip away at your initial goals.  If your main goal is simply to get your butt into the gym a few times a week, then that’s a start.  Once going to the gym twice a week becomes part of your lifestyle and a positive habit you do regularly, then you can make a next goal – maybe to up your attendance to three times per week.

Don’t over-reach.  That’s a great way to fail.  The task at hand seems too big and daunting – it’s pointless, so why bother.  That’s the way a lot of people think, and it’s a really big reason why a lot of people continue to go around and around this circle of gym failure.  A lot of people will be much happier and content with themselves with they made these short and manageable short term goals.

When we achieve a goal, it feels good and in turn, we feel good about ourselves.  It helps to provide motivation to continue doing what we’re doing, and that can never be a bad thing.

The same can go for your nutrition.  Don’t start by cutting out all things bad.  Instead, just cut back on a few things, like only having 3 take away meals each week, instead of 5 or more.  Having 1 glass of wine each night, as opposed to having half a bottle (or perhaps more!).

This process can go for anything.  The amount of time you spend watching TV, how many cigarettes you smoke per day, or even how many hours sleep you get each night.  By identifying where you are now, it will allow you to establish where you need to be which will guide you towards a happier and healthier you.
